{ a drink } no need to wait for cinco de mayo for these perfect blended margaritas

Confession time: I didn't learn about Cinco de Mayo until I reached high school. In fact, growing up, pretty much the only "Mexican" thing about our family home life was the food we ate a few times a week. We didn't grow up speaking Spanish and I admit, it always sounded just a little odd to hear my folks speak it with my grandparents when they visited.

I went to my first Cinco de Mayo celebration well after college and the funny thing is that the party was thrown by non-hispanics; I think I was the only latina in attendance. It's not about the holiday (contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexican independence day), instead, I see it more as a time to get together with friends, eat some tacos, down some margaritas and get ready to say hello to summer.

I'd say most people probably have their own way of making margaritas. Some use bottled mixes. Others juice fresh limes (that's fine if you're only making them for one or two folks but too much work for me when it comes to a PARTAY!). Once I got turned onto these and I moved away from bottled mixes these margaritas became my absolute favorite. Low fuss, low mess, big limey goodness. Give 'em a whirl and let me know what you think.

The stage includes: a blender (this baby of mine is reserved for drinks only and truth be told, it pretty much is exclusive to weekend maggies), kosher salt (don't waste money on “margarita salt”), limes, plenty of ice, triple-sec (an orange liqueur), your favorite good quality tequila and the star ingredient – limeade concentrate.

Fill the blender with ice.

Add 6 ounces of tequila (1 full shot is 1.5 oz so that means 4 shots).

Add 3 ounces (2 full shots) of triple-sec.

Add 6 ounces of a container of thawed limeade (half of standard 12 ounce frozen juice container). An entire container makes for a very sweet maggie. However, if you’ve got a serious sweet tooth, go for it! Also, it’s important to note that I’ve made this with generic limeades and to paraphrase a cliché: Not all brands are created equal. It’s definitely worth it to buy Minute Maid. There is just so much more lime-goodness kick to it.

Mmm, look at that juicy color. Now, if you're not into the icy goodness like I am, you could put all the ingredients up to now directly into your big pitcher, mix well and serve. Me? Well, I say...

Blend, baby, blend!

Rub the rim of a margarita glass with a lime wedge and...

...immediately swirl rim in a plate of kosher salt.

Pour. Decorate the glass with a lime slice and enjoy.

Perfect Blended Margaritas

Serves 4-6
ice
4 shots (6 ounces) good quality tequila
2 shots (3 ounces) triple-sec
6 ounces (half a container) Minute Maid Frozen Limeade Concentrate (thawed is easier to measure)
kosher salt
limes, some cut into wedges for salting the glass, others sliced to garnish the glasses
  1. Fill a blender with ice to about 3/4 full. Add tequila, triple-sec and limeade concentrate. Blend until ice is crushed.
  2. Place enough salt on a plate to just cover. Rub the rim of a glass with a lime wedge. Invert glass in salt and spin glass until desired amount of salt is transferred to rim.
  3. Fill glass with blended drink mix and garnish glass with a lime wedge.
Happy Wednesday!

Until next time,
Ani
